1997 ford f-250 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Most obvious is the rounded snout, raked windshield and overall smooth look. But the big changes were underneath, with a completely new front suspension, new frame and new family of engines.  ford's f-series line includes the lighter-duty f-150, medium-duty f-250 and heavy-duty f-350. Initially, the new look and accompanying improvements applied only to the f-150, but for 1997 they're extended to and f-250 models rated under 8500 gvwr (gross vehicle weight rating). It's due for its own major redesign within a year or so. walkaroundwithin the f-150/250 series there is the regular cab and the extended supercab; wheelbase lengths of 119. 9 in., 138. 5 in. Not all possible combinations are available. But, by and large, there ought to be something here for just about anybody. The total, including a 'special added discount' that took off $1850, came to $27,495.  the new triton engine family is terrific, especially the 5. 4-liter version. In smoothness, it embarrasses practically every other truck engine on the market. The power delivery is crisp and responsive, and to good low-end power it adds excellent mid-range and higher-speed power to make short work of real-world demands such as quick acceleration to freeway speeds.  another very welcome change is a completely new front suspension with upper and lower control arms. It replaces the ancient twin i-beam, and we're thankful. What can serve as the center backrest is also a folding armrest; when folded forward, it provides a large cupholder and spacious bin. Inside this storage bin are places for coins, tapes and so forth, and a divider for organizing odds and ends.  the driver is faced with comprehensive, clearly-legible instrumentation, and everything that needs to be is close and easy to operate. There are two cupholders in the instrument panel, and a goodly number of the storage compartments and map pockets here and there. Appreciated by one woman passenger were two grab handles which aided climbing in and, once in, pulling the door shut.  the view outward is superb, as the new styling job has included a low beltline and big windows all around. The only gripe we had was a vertically-narrow inside rear-view mirror.  all supercabs include a third door as standard equipment, on the passenger's side, for access to the back seat. It's operable once the main passenger's door is open, and it can be opened from inside or out. Once in, back-seat passengers will find things tolerably comfortable for three adults, and probably not too bad for trips of some distance with only two adults in back. For some time, partly due to the twin i-beam, partly due to over-assisted power steering, ford trucks had a numb feel through the steering and would wander when encountering large dips or road irregularities, and were very susceptible to being blown around by crosswinds. And it had a high degree of directional stability, which helps to keep the vehicle headed down its intended path. Ride, too, was remarkably good. One big problem with pickup trucks has always been how poorly they tend to ride when empty; this can become really annoying on fairly long trips on concrete interstate highways, where the truck will bounce ceaselessly. There's no truck-like roar or rumble, no feeling that it's overworked at higher speeds. Again, driving around the city, or taking an extended highway cruise, the 5. 4-liter triton engine was probably the most velvety full-size pickup truck engine we've encountered. The 4. 6-liter version is equally smooth, but less powerful, and we highly recommend the stronger 5. 4-liter v8. The interior is extraordinary, the new v8s are silky and strong, the ride and drive is exceptional and it's full to the brim with worthwhile features. All-wheel drive and lower pricing make for a compelling luxury car. introductionthe jaguar x-type is coventry's entry-level luxury sedan, designed to compete with the bmw 3 series, mercedes-benz c-class, audi a4 and, to some extent, the lexus is 300 and acura tl. The performance of the jaguar compares favorably to these cars, while offering a distinct difference in feel and temperament. The x-type is elegant, comfortable, and fun to drive. Starting at $29,330, it represents a low cost of entry for a jaguar and a strong value in this highly competitive class. It also gives its owner the distinction of driving a jag.  the x-type looks unmistakably like a jaguar, and that's no small design feat given its relatively compact dimensions. Better still, the x-type smells and feels like a jaguar, with all the traditional british ingredients that have defined the brand for seven decades. That makes the x-type a good choice for rain, snow and ice, and indeed it feels very secure in those conditions.  for 2004, jaguar delivers the first significant changes since the x-type was introduced two years ago. There are new colors and new, larger wheel designs. Option packages have been re-aligned, and perhaps most significantly, the x-type's price-value equation has been improved. The less-expensive 2004 x-type 2. 5-liter actually costs $620 less than when the car was launched in the fall of 2001. The high-trim x-type 3. 0-liter is nearly $3,000 less than last year. All-wheel drive, which jaguar calls traction 4, comes standard.  both have standard equipment expected of a jaguar: glossy sapele wood trim, connolly leather-trimmed seating, and power windows, mirrors, door locks and driver's seat. That glossy jaguar wood is more lavishly applied inside the 3. 0. Three packages are popular: premium, sport, and luxury. The premium package 875) includes an eight-way power passenger seat and two-way power lumbar support for both front seats, rain-sensing wipers, a trip computer and homelink-compatible garage door/gate opener.  the sport package 2,750) includes gray-stained wood trim, sports seats with extra side bolstering, body-colored exterior trim as opposed to chrome, a rear spoiler, dynamic stability control, a sport-tuned suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels with high-performance tires. It also adds xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps and a premium 320-watt alpine sound system. The manual transmission is available with this package for the same price.  the luxury package 3,500) delivers jaguar's traditionally high level of luxury, starting with lamb's wool floor rugs, contrasting piping on the seats, burl walnut wood trim and more expansively applied exterior chrome. It includes reverse park aid to warn the driver of hidden obstacles, heated front seats, the alpine stereo with a six-cd changer (in the trunk), the dsc electronic stability control system, and the contents of the premium package.    individually priced options for all x-type models include the heated seats 500), reverse park aid 325), and dsc 525). The gps navigation system 2,300) includes a seven-inch touch-screen that also provides control for the audio and climate systems and allows subscription to the jaguarnet emergency communication and tracking system. Voice activation for audio, climate control and the navigation system is available as a dealer-installed option.  safety features include curtain-style head protection airbags for front and rear passenger, dual-stage frontal airbags and front side-impact airbags managed by a sophisticated sensor system. Anti-lock brakes (abs), pre-tensioning front safety belts with load-limiters and three-point belts for all seats are also standard. walkaroundever since ford took over jaguar, purists have been scrutinizing every move the company makes in an effort to turn up some evidence of 'fording down' the illustrious british marque. The fact that the x-type has a common ancestry with ford of europe's front-wheel-drive mondeo really got their ears up. No, and those dyed-in-the-green types at jaguar couldn't either. Thus the x-type has all-wheel drive, a happy state that would probably not have come about had designers started with a clean sheet of paper. In reality, only about 20 percent of the x-type has any connection to the mondeo.  the x-type is clearly a jaguar. It looks more like the full-size xj than the more retro, mid-size s-type, which was jaguar's first effort to broaden its customer base.  the x-type is some 7 inches shorter than the s-type. So the challenge facing the x-type designers was to make a relatively short car look low and long. They did it using lots of horizontal lines, body sculpting and a high-tailed wedge shape, though the wedge is more obvious in photographs than in person. The illusion is generally successful and the x-type looks bigger on the road than its dimensions suggest.  the design of the grille and headlamps, with fluting that sweeps back over the hood, make the x-type look like a baby xj. The front view is broadened with two sets of side-by-side round lights flanking jaguar's traditional horizontal split grille. This makes it look more conservative than the s-type, which features a unique round grille. Riding the hood of the x-type is the traditional bounding jaguar known as the bonnet leaper. Such hood ornaments are outlawed in europe, so x-types there make do with the flat, full-faced jaguar known as the growler.  the visual stance of the x-type is not affected by the all-wheel-drive system. To try to gain awareness for the all-wheel-drive, the 2004 x-type models have added an 'awd' badge on the trunk chrome. This is a ground-loving vehicle that makes the eye believe it is longer and lower than it is, and bigger as well. What at first blush seems to be busy-ness about the indents, horizontal lines and visual cues of jaguarness fades with on-going exposure, evolving into acceptance and even appreciation. Anyway, the car looks better on the road than it does in pictures, or even in the showroom. interiorthis is a real jag on the inside, too. Jaguar's leather and wood are done as well as they were in the days when those luxury touches were not added to every model on the road.  the standard seats are quite good, supportive and comfortable, and they can be adjusted every which way. Aggressive side bolstering is added with the sport package, which is appropriate for more aggressive driving. Side bolstering requires more effort when getting in and out of the seat, however, so the sport package is best left for those who love spirited roadwork. We had no trouble flinging the car around with the standard seats.  the cabin has a spacious feel, and outward visibility is enhanced by the slimness of the roof pillars. With the elevation of the driver's seat easily adjustable, drivers of varying heights have an excellent forward view over the hood. The outside mirrors are particularly generous in size, a welcome safety feature at a time when the mirrors on some of the german cars appear to be getting smaller.  all the switchgear operates intuitively. While there is no evident feminization, this thinking is obvious in controls that fall within easy reach and a steering wheel that tilts and telescopes, allowing her to adjust perfectly to the car. Good ergonomics know no gender, however, and the x-type adjusts to men quite swimmingly. People of all body types will find a comfortable home in the x-type. The doors have a handy tray near the door handle, as well as a large main pocket. There are dozens of nooks to stow phones, cassettes, cds, pens, maps or tissues, even ice scrapers and an umbrella. There's even a retractable hook in the glovebox release to hold a handbag, small shopping bag or take-out. The center console is small, however, and there is only one cupholder.  the design of the x-type isn't all about style. The trunk is big, something that can't be said for all jaguars. With 16 cubic feet of cargo space, the x-type beats the impressive trunk on the audi a4 (13. 4 cubic feet) and the relatively din.

John rettie. introductionthe suzuki sx4 is an all-new subcompact car that comes standard with all-wheel drive. Suzuki says sx4 stands for (s)port (x)-over for (4) seasons. We found these were all good reasons to like this car.  the sx4 is indeed reasonably sporty, when equipped with a manual transmission. We'd classify it as cute. Finally, it's good for all seasons as it comes standard with an effective all-wheel-drive system.  a number of all-new models brings excitement to the subcompact segment. The suzuki sx4 competes directly with the new honda fit, nissan versa, toyota yaris, kia rio, hyundai accent, and chevrolet aveo. Yet the sx4 comes with all-wheel drive and it looks, drives and feels different from these other cars. lineupthe sx4 comes in two trim levels, the sx4 14,999) and the sx4 sport 16,399). From the side its profile has an uncanny resemblance to the latest mercedes-benz ml-class suv. That's not bad considering the ml has a much sleeker look to it than other more blunt-nosed suvs.  it seems strange to talk about the sx4 in the same breath as an suv, but it is exactly how suzuki describes it in the u. To be fair it describes it as a crossover, which is accurate in that it has a tailgate, fold down rear seats for added cargo space and all-wheel-drive. In europe, where the car was designed and has been well received, it's described as a hatchback. Nothing wrong with that in europe where hatchbacks are considered smart and practical.  one of the most unusual design cues is the unusually large quarter panel in the front door windows. Another is the wraparound glass at the rear behind the c-pillars, which are placed well forward of the tailgate. These design features give the car a distinct look.  the sx4 has a large windshield that slopes down to a hood that has a nicely curved front edge that wraps around the large one-piece headlight/turn signal units which are in turn nicely integrated into the sheetmetal. The curve of bodywork from the front of the distinctive front fenders extends down to the lower lip of the front bumper with its large air intake.  all in all, we found the design of the sx4 to be very pleasing. It does not look too small and despite its high roof line it has a sleek and modern stance. interiorthe suzuki sx4 is more a utility vehicle than an ordinary sedan, so we were particularly interested in the back end of the cabin. The specifications say there is only 10 cubic feet of luggage space with the back seats in place it seems much larger primarily because it is fully useable with little intrusion from the wheelwells. The wide track and low mounted rear suspension components allow for a flat floor.  tip the 60/40 split rear seats up all the way and there's a generous 38 cubic feet of cargo space, with a flat floor all the way to the hinges on the front underside edge of the seat bottoms. Getting stuff in and out is a breeze thanks to a full-width one-piece tailgate.  considering the overall size of the car, rear-seat leg room is pretty good, more than sufficient for a six-footer. Put in perspective it's the same as in the much larger mercedes-benz e-class but not quite as generous as in the similar size nissan versa. No gimmicks; everything is well placed and the brushed aluminum trim seems to be well finished. The car has decent cupholders and large map pockets in the front and rear doors.  three gauges fill the instrument pod, located in front of the steering wheel. The large speedometer is mounted in the central position slightly overlapping the smaller tachometer. driving impressionone of the best things about permanent all-wheel-drive is that the benefits are available at all times. Even on a dry road the car sticks well with no torque steer or spinning wheels. It goes without saying that the car grips much better on slippery surfaces.  as an aside all modern rally cars use all-wheel-drive and suzuki has announced it will enter the spectacularly fast world rally championship in 2008 with a high performance specially built version of the sx4. Although the company will not say officially, it does appear promising that there will be a production version of this car probably named the suzuki sx4 swt (suzuki works techno).  subaru's wrx and mitsubishi's evo, both wrc-based road cars, have been hot tickets with car enthusiasts for several years. Suzuki already enjoys a strong following with bike enthusiasts so it makes sense for the company to follow in subaru and mitsubishi's footsteps down the rally performance road.  this is a roundabout way of saying that the sx4 has the basic ingredients for a solid performance car. It has a wide track for great handling and it seems to have a solid body. The downside is it tips the scales with a slight weight penalty, which means it is not much faster than its competitors and its fuel consumption is not quite as good.  the all-wheel-drive system is called i-awd and operates in three modes via a console-mounted switch. The 2wd mode is for maximum fuel economy on dry pavement, the awd auto mode controls the drive power distribution ratio to the rear wheels from zero to 50 percent, depending on available traction while the awd lock mode is designed to facilitate traction in case of snow or mud. When in the lock mode, power is distributed to the rear wheels in the range of 30 percent to 50 percent. The lock mode is useful for really adverse conditions at slow speeds.  we found the car fun to drive with a manual transmission. The sx4 with achieves a slightly better epa-estimated fuel economy rating with an automatic than it does with the manual.  the power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering feels fine with virtually no sign of torque steer. It might not be quite crisp enough for a racer but it's far from being sloppy. We never had the chance to try the brakes in a panic but have no reason to doubt they work fine especially as abs and electronic brake-force distribution are included on all models.  overall handling is competent thanks, as much as anything, to the long wheelbase and wide track as well as the awd system. Those who like a soft cushy ride might find it a little too stiff for their liking. Those who want a sports car like ride will want to install stiffer springs and stronger shocks. The sport model does not include any suspension changes. Nonetheless the sx4 does appear to provide a good base for making a truly sporty small car a la wrx or evo. summarythe suzuki sx4 is an ideal small car for anyone looking for something other than just the cheapest most basic car. The sx4 might cost slightly more but it delivers more, including all-wheel drive. In many ways it is difficult to pigeonhole the sx4, though it's probably fair to say it fits between the honda fit and the subaru impreza. As an added bonus, there's suzuki's 100,000-mile, seven-year, fully transferable, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty.  newcartestdrive. So it's ready to compete in the hotly contested crossover segment with a whole bunch of new arrows in its quiver.  like the ford taurus and mercury sable sedans, the taurus x is loosely based on the same architecture as the volvo s80 luxury sedan and volvo xc90 suv and it uses the same swedish haldex all-wheel-drive system as the volvo on awd versions. Likewise, last year's continuously variable transmission has been replaced by a new 6f six-speed automatic.  this new powertrain makes the 2008 ford taurus x a whole lot more fun to drive than the freestyle crossover was. Simple math tells us that makes the haldex all-wheel-drive system an $1850 option on all models.  sel comes with cloth upholstery, manually controlled air conditioning, am/fm/cd, six-way adjustable driver's seat, power windows, power locks, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  the eddie bauer edition adds leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic temperature control, power adjustable pedals, 6cd, front consoles, eight-way adjustable driver's seat with memory, woodgrain applique trim. Eddie bauer carries a distinctive two-tone paint job, plus 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and tires, wiper-activated headlamps, and eddie bauer logos inside and out.  limited adds premium audio system with subwoofer, second-row consoles, chrome interior trim, auto tilt-down in reverse for outside mirror, heated front seats.  options for the taurus x include voice-activated dvd navigation system 1995), reverse sensing system 295), power liftgate 475), auxiliary hvac system 650), dvd entertainment system 995), advancetrac electronic stability control 495), power moonroof 960), heated seats 240), sirius satellite radio equipment 195), and 18-inch seven-spoke chrome wheels 695).  safety features include front, side and curtain airbags, abs and traction control. Latch child seat anchors and rear safety locks are standard. walkaroundin the design change from freestyle to taurus x, ford has completely redone the front end, with a large three-bar horizontal grille that fits in better with the ford family look of the focus, fusion, edge, and the coming flex. The hood, fenders, headlamps and driving lamps are all new, with a bit more bling around them here and there. From the dashboard rearward, though, it's pretty much carried over from the freestyle, because it was a pretty solid package to begin with.  likewise, the edge-clone taillamps, rear quarter panels and decklid have been redone, and the rear bumper has been rejiggered to feature exposed dual exhaust tips. The roof rack has been strengthened and reinforced to carry more load. interiorthe ford taurus x cabin has a light and airy feel, an important feature. Epa-rated passenger volume is 146 cubic feet. Taurus x seats up to seven people.  cargo capacity is generous, with a 15 cubic-foot space behind the third row, 47 cubic feet behind the second row with the third-row seats folded, and 86 cubic feet with all the seats folded down, according to epa measurements. The power liftgate makes loading easy. And the taurus x has a relatively low load height when compared with other crossover suvs, which makes loading and unloading heavy objects easier.  the second- and third-row seats are very easy to flip, fold, and reset. The second-row seats slide fore and aft and recline for an extra measure of flexibility.  overall, the interior ambience is modern, nicely laid out and, the materials are reasonably good throughout. The well-crafted seats, panels and other accommodations have a quality feel, as do the instruments, controls, shifter, seats, console, and dashboard. This system has received positive reviews from everyone we've talked to who has learned how to use it. The sync system has the ability to have text messages read aloud, voice recognition for control of both phone and music functions, and phonebook transfer. The system is upgradeable for future players and for additional functionality down the road. That's especially true when compared with the old 3. 0-liter engine and cvt transmission, which was awful.  the 2008 engine is quiet and smooth at idle, with a pendulum mounting system that separates its motions and vibrations from the rest of the car. It sounds healthy, powerful and smooth at full throttle, and the taurus x has very good acceleration for passing. And, as mentioned, the taurus x is very quiet inside at freeway speeds.  no complaints on the steering and suspension. The taurus x has pretty good steering feel for what it is, a family hauler, with plenty of steering assist for easy driving around town and decreasing assist at highway speeds so it doesn't wander or get sloppy.  the ride is soft and compliant, with plenty of suspension travel and damping to soak up bumps and potholes. There's not much body roll (lean) in the corners. We'd prefer to have one size wider tires for more aggressive cornering, but that would probably eat into the gas mileage.  the brakes are very solid and nicely progressive from top of pedal to bottom. We never felt the standard esp system go on, but it's always there, and now it's standard on all models. summarythe ford taurus x is a much better vehicle than the freestyle. The acceleration, shifting performance, powertain smoothness, and fuel economy are of a much higher order now. The instrument panel is more interesting and prettier to look at. 2002 nissan xterra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Supercharged performance and interior refinements add appeal. introductionnissan's xterra is, well, it's cool. It's cool to have an interior mountain bike rack. It's cool to be rugged. It's cool that it's retro at the same time that it's a trendsetter. And now it's cool to have a supercharged engine, a new option for 2002.  with its special blend of style and function, the xterra has been a huge success ever since nissan launched this compact sport-utility in 2000. The xterra concept has prevailed beyond nissan's expectations and hopes; heck, it's still just catching on, and for 2002 it has a more powerful engine, an updated interior and a restyled front end with new headlights and a bulging hood. lineuptwo xterra models are available: xe and se. Standard equipment includes a tubular roof rack with removable gear basket, air conditioning, a 100-watt audio system with a cd player, anti-lock brakes and a full-size spare tire.  xe v6 19,199) models come with a 3. 3-liter single overhead-cam v6 that produces 170 horsepower.  se 23,199) models come standard with the v6 engine and such equipment as fog lamps, tubular step rails, upgraded seats, cruise control, an in-dash 6-cd changer, first aid kit, power windows, locks and mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry and larger (16-inch) wheels and tires.  a supercharged v6 engine that produces 210 horsepower and 246 pound-feet of torque is available with either trim package. But nissan didn't stop there. The california design team crafted new round headlights and a new front fascia to give the sport-utility an even more rugged and muscular look. Essentially, the 2002 xterra got a new front clip. This new look is enhanced by the availability of three new colors: shock blue, sedona and molten lava.  the xterra has visual distinction that says rugged. For 2002, bigger tires add to this. Considering the vehicle's hype about function, this is a significant if small oversight. Nissan says the pathfinder is similar, and nobody ever complained. A large new console is outfitted with map pocket, power ports and push-out cup holders. The xe has gray gauges while the se's are bluish. Also new are the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning controls. The glove box is 25 percent larger.  the long-criticized, dash-mounted, pull-and-twist parking brake has been replaced with a foot-operated pedal system. This is a big improvement, though we'd still prefer a traditional hand-brake lever. The manual shift lever is on the tall size.  for 2002, the front seats are comfortable and supportive. The bucket seats fit well and provide good lumbar support. A cd changer holds six cds, which can be selected with the six radio station buttons. The heater controls are three big switches with wings. There are front and rear auxiliary dc outlets in addition to the cigarette lighter, and big fixed cupholders front and rear. Cruise control and radio controls are located on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, with wide spokes located at 3, 9, 5 and 7 o'clock. The whole padded center is the horn, the best and safest operation because of quick access. The horn is tinny but strong, a no-frills statement.  we took the xterra windsurfing, and missed the cool accessory seat covers made of wetsuit material. Other nice available cabin details include the side window demisters and rear heat ducts, smart storage crannies, as many as 10 cargo hooks on floor and ceiling, and a strap on the tailgate to close it from the inside.  rear seating is not the most comfortable. There's not much side support. Rear-seat passengers can slide their feet under the front seats, but it's a little tight, an inch less than the smaller toyota rav4. There's lots of headroom, though. The roof is raised over the rear seats to allow for their elevation, providing a nice view through the windshield.  because it's built on the frontier pickup truck platform, xterra's engineers must have been challenged to squeeze everything in, while providing lots of good cargo space (65. 6 cubic feet with the seats folded down, 44. 5 cubic feet with the seats up).  the 50-50 rear seatbacks fold down fairly flat, but the seat bottoms must be removed. At least they're featherweight. driving impressionthe 2002 xterra feels tighter than last year's model. It feels smoother and more refined than before. Thanks to high-tech sound insulation in places not normally insulated, the 2002 nissan xterra is quiet at freeway speeds. However, floor the throttle and the single-cam v6 gets pretty loud. And the luggage rack hisses in the wind.  the xterra sways at gusts and leans in curves, not surprising given its height and boxy shape. That big vertical rear window provides excellent visibility, but it gathers dust and dirt like crazy. The rear wiper/washer is optional on the xe, but should be considered standard equipment for anyone who drives in anything less than perfect conditions on a dry road.  the xterra is nimble at slower speeds, feeling lighter than its 4130 pounds. The steering is very nice. The suspension does a great job on washboard gravel roads. Power steering is by recirculating ball. The chassis rides on the backs of 10 individually tuned dual-rate rubber chassis mounts, so there's no harshness there at all. At the same time, the ladder chassis from the frontier is certainly strong. Unlike a turbocharger, the supercharger delivers its power the moment the driver pushes on the throttle. It delivers strong torque (246 pounds-feet of torque at 2800 rpm), though it doesn't turn the xterra into a rocket. Acceleration is accompanied by that supercharger whine, which some people like and others don't.
